Sunday blues

I really didnt have the blues it was one of the best sundays I’ve had since I moved here one of my Korean friends Si Nae came to Ansan to visit me! I was so excited because anytime I want to see people I usually have to travel about an hour and sum change….total bummer because there are so many things in Ansan I want to discover but it requires you to have a partner in crime…so whats the blues…well I suck as a photographer I mean I know I have an eye for pictures I just need to take a class to help with my skills particularly using the different shutter speeds and re-learning the exposure times to the light…aahhhhh I once was a pro but I’m rusty and she just proved it…

Well there are two things I like– I like taking pictures and I like people taking my picture so she was loving it!!! check some of the pics out

Signing up for photography classes as soon as I get back home!!!

me and Si Nae

Can you pay my bills…

So No I dont have pictures of money to flash like some loser guys tend to do on Facebook and myspace….

I instead wanted to show you what the money looks like and the lack there of for their currency bills. For one thing their money is called ‘Won’ and they come in 1,000, 5,000, 10,000 and 50,000 increments. They just recently started producing the 50,000 won which is a hassle because 1. you can only withdrawal five of them a day and 2. I hate walking around with cash let alone small bills rolled up in my pocket like I got drug money.

I usually just use my debit card to prevent anything from getting lost or misplaced–oh yea your allowed to have  printed checks in 100,000won increments but i’m not sure how it works no one has been able to explain the process to me… for now I have a whole bunch printed and stashed away in my a/c vent hahaha I dont trust the banks not here not in America!

So the bills that I pay on a continuous basis is as follows:

Electricity which equals about: 15,540 won a month ($14 US) in the winter it was like 80,000owon a month($76 US) heated floors

Gas which equal about: 4,500($4US)

Transportation which equals about: 70,000won a month give or take it depends on if I travel around A LOT during the weekends and such($68US)

Cell phone which equals about: 18,000won a month($17US) I dont talk on the phone a lot, text perhaps

Thats it!!! Those are all my bills I didnt add food because it fluctuates too much some months I eat out a lot some months I cook. Two time out of the week I eat with my Korean family sooooo that helps too food is relatively expensive in my opinion to cook at home but to eat out is cheaper–western style restaurants can be expensive.

This is quite unusual but my school pays my water and maintenance fees–these fees should usually be my responsibility but I’m not complaining don’t really know how I lucked up either! My co-teacher has mentioned to me twice that I have to start paying 20,000won for the maintenance fees but they have yet to take the money from me….and guess who’s not reminding them either…hehhehehe

So what do I spend most of my earning on….well shopping of course!!!(yes I save as well hence the stashing of monies) I have an addiction to clothes and hair accessories— lately I’ve slowed down on all that as I’m preparing for my moms arrival and then I will be leaving for India there after…oh yea it’s definitely going down in India!!

I’m in love…..

With this new artist called Bruno Mars– not only do I think he’s a cutie but he has AMAZING vocals….

I think I have a type of  man I like, I like a guy thats not afraid to wear what his personality eludes social awkwardness>worldly>imaginative>passionate>free love-free thinker>down to earth>sexy and confident!!!! At least thats what I see when I look at these pics

Baila y Baila

Its safe to say I should stick with reggae, hip hop and rock music because i’m NO salsa dancer. Pam and I decided to hit up the spanish club and get our baila y baila on. Pam is colombian so she likes to shake it out every now and again, i’m always down for whatever and since I was feeling extra froggy I leaped for it(hahaha).  sidebar: i’m now into spanish guys for some reason actually it has a lot to do with Adam Rodriguez you know that SEXY Puerto rican/cuban(hay Caliente) he is on CSI:Miami, did a couple of movies, recently did a photo shoot with Janet Jackson in the upcoming essence magazine…ok enough of my drooling!

Met a friend Erik and he is from Mazatlan, Mexico. He made sure I remembered that, he tried to give me lessons but told me hes not much of a teacher and he was right! He would give up on me after 1minute of teaching me the dance move—-I was like WTH  “no me gusta bailes” he would crack up laughing he spoke very little english and I speak very little spanish….I used to be fluent but lost it. I would love to pick back up on it and I will need to because he invited me to come visit him in Mazatlan and I sure do wanna take him up on his offer. I’m turning into a travel junkie and I might as well I’m 25, I have no kids, I have no bills, I have no apt/house and I have no man!!

We went to another club and I ran into another spanish dude that I was kinda diggin on…he’s from LA and he’s a skater–you know I love me some sk8ters too!! Please lord keep them coming thats all I ask.

A week at a glance

Just in case you thought this teaching thing is easy and a no brainer heres a look at my schedule and the work that I put in the actual classroom. The spaces that are empty I spend lesson planning and catching a break! My work hours are from 8:30-4:30, lunch is at 12:20 usually I just in the caf and head right back up stairs to plan some more.

This schedule normally stays as is unless the kids have field trips or testing then if thats the case my afterschool classes are added on for 40 more minutes to make up for the time lost!!! Thats the kicker for me.

So do you think you could hang??

Eclicpse…Just what I needed to wake me up.

Friday while at school I was skyping my friend and she invited me out to join her to watch the third installment of twilight Eclipse…mind you I have never been into these vampire/wolf series of shows nor do I keep up with the characters.

So to my suprise the week before I went to get my hair cut (I finally got my hair cut…well evened out since post BC at the barber shop and let me tell you im loving the TWA even more) anyways the owner of the shop had the 2nd installment of the movie playing and I practically watched the whole thing so I said mmmmm well it wasnt as corny as I thought it would be sooo what the heck why not. I was having loveley thoughts about Jacob…if you watch the movie you know what im talking about! So I said to myself well if the movie sucks at least Jacob can satisfy my eye candy urges(eye candy is so NOT poppin out here *deep exhale*)

We ended up at coex mall a huge mall in the heart of Seoul this mall is so HUGE I been here 4times and still find new stores

I have turned into a hair accesory junkie since living here

jackie chans restuarant

We purchased our tickets right away but  we still ended up having to get front row seats because Koreans are what I like to call ‘movie stalkers’: they see any movie it doesnt matter what it is, they love the movies!

Thats Jane in front she was my muse for the day

One thing that is strange about Korean movie theaters is that its arranged seating, so you must pick your seat while your purchasing the ticket. As you can see here in the picture we were deciding where we should sit out of the crappy seats that were still available, thats the one thing I hate about the movies here.

He tried to avoid me I told him I was going to take a picture

We then went to Kraze burger which was a grade A restuarant I miss the lettering system from back home so anytime I see one of these I immediately walk in just because I know its clean.

I had to order the chili cheese hamburger, oh how I miss my chili cheese foods mmmmmmmmm

Then off to the movies we went, we sat front row which wasnt as bad as I thought it would be, I nearly had a stroke when Jacob made his debut. I hopped outta my seat and held my heart….Jane was like are you frantic much!!!! The guy that was sitting next to me kept staring at me because I would blurt out “lawd have mercy” everytime he appeared with his shirt off.

That movie was just what I needed to wake my senses up, I have been in a daze this last month just continuosly counting the days till summer vacation–hence the lack of posts. Sometimes I find it easier to just zone out and turn zombie, I’ve never been able to do this in my life as a matter of fact I wish I was able to learn this technique for my last job. Its quite scary being able to just block out more then 8hours of my day to day life, but living in another country in 90% seclusion does something to the mind I cant even put in words.

Well you dont have to worry about that affecting me because I had one of those weekends where I tapped into my extremist modes and went for whatever was on the agenda…..lost my cell phone in the process and I didnt even care!!!

and so the crazyness begins

Discipline at school

one of the kids kicked out of the classroom and in trouble with his hands in the air.

If you have strong feelings about kids being disciplined i.e. spankings, slapped, knocked on the head etc. Please do yourself a favor and skip over this post! I have been meaning to write about this particular subject since I arrived but it wasnt until today that I finally decided to go ahead and speak on it. What happened today that prompted this sudden urge you may ask????

Well today I went to the teacher’s office to make some photocopies for my illegal work on the side hehehehe(I’ll get into that during another post) when I walked in 8 kids were being brutally scorned and yelled at by the two male 6th grade teachers and the superintendent was there to observe and chime in when he felt the need to do so. Upon first inspection I thought they were caught for cheating as this week is finals– LAST WEEK OF SCHOOL!! CAN YOU HEAR THE EXCITEMENT IN MY VOICE!!!!!! HIP HIP HORRAY…CHEERS. …POP BOTTLES ok back to the story. I walk in and immediately feel the tension in the air, I look over on the couch and who do I see but the eight boys that are always causing mayhem around school. The teachers were cussing them a new one I could just tell, some of them were crying and I just wanted to sit and stare but I didn’t.

I went onto photocopying my work when out of no where the superintendent flys over to one of the kids and starts hitting him WOAHH did the superintendent just get gangsta with one of the kids. Then he started hitting them all…..dang….wheres the popcorn am thinking!!!! I kept peering over trying to figure out what the heck happened, they kept taking turns yelling and hitting….did I feel bad hell NO!!! Before you start judging (if any of you are out there judging) know that the superintendent rarely disciplines the kids, he usually never gets involved unless its something MAJOR. As a matter of fact the principle and VP never discipline the kids strange I know considering I was infamous for being called into the VP office during my middle school days, and then later the principles office when I was really misbehaving hahahaha.

So I left the office in search of Ji-yeong my co-teacher, I just had to know what was happening. 5mins later she walks into our office and I instantly start gossiping to her about what I just saw and she gives me her sour puss face “I know Monique its a terrible thing that happened” so I blurt out “did they get in trouble for cheating on the tests” and she goes “cheating” “really”  “uhhhh ji-yeong they didn’t cheat then what happened” after 10mins of  horrible english and me having to re-explain myself she finally broke down and told me “Monique those eight boys are in trouble because they attacked one kid” “attacked what do you mean like they jumped a kid, beat him up” “beat up? what’s beat up” “like they each hurt this one kid” “yes, yes” “WHAT, who did they beat up is he bruised is he in the hospital or something” “those kids beat him up and told him to take his socks off and told him to smell them and said other things, so the boys parents called the school, and so their in BIG trouble, and Monique they taped it with their cell phone so now I have to go to 6th grade teachers office to go watch the video, it’s very bad thing” ” What!!! I want to see the video too, their not going to let me watch the video are they?” “ummm I havent seen the video yet so I dunno, but last month they stole a bike from a kid so their in a lot of trouble because they keep getting into trouble” ” OOhhhh ok, so who got beat up” ” uggghhhh I dunno yet so I will watch a video and talk with teacher about that, so see you later Monique bye, aahhhhh awful thing i’m really upset agggghhhhhh this isnt good” “Ji-yeong its ok its not a big deal their kids they do stuff like this their boys” “mmmmmmmmhhhhh aggghhhhh, see you”

She was being a bit dramatic as usual but whatevs, I mean really the kids are cooped up in school for practically 8hours a day and like 15-20mins to play for lunch it should be expected that once the heat came they would get into a bit of mischief, but im mad they taped it what the hell were they thinking. Anyways back to the discipline there are many ways they/we discipline the kids. In Korea they knock them on the head, slap their backs, make them stand all class period, humiliate them during the middle of class, make them stand up against the wall with their hands in the air, in the yoga world we call it downward facing dog, make them hold two books in each hand and crouch, slap them with a wooden stick, pinch their cheeks really hard, and one time I even seen one of the teachers pick the kid up by his shoulders and slam him up against the wall-that one caught me off guard but the kid she man handled he’s a handful so I knew it wasnt out of the ordinary….these practices are quite accepted at school and is even encouraged by parents you must understand teachers are held in high esteem in Korean culture so when you disobey the teacher it is intolerable.

I myself have disciplined some of the kids in a less aggressive approach afterall these are not my own kids, so my go to choices are the cheeks and the muscles in between your shoulders–they hate that. My objective is to not hurt them but to send them a message that you’re not going to get over on me, don’t try me!!!!
